Towards clear-eyed, responsible and creative use!
We often picture digital technology as a magic "cloud" β light and entirely immaterial. Yet behind every search query, every AI-generated image, every video stream or smartphone lies a hidden world of assembly plants, rare-metal mines, giant servers running hot 24/7, and thousands of kilometres of undersea cables.
Our mission: this isn't about demonising AI or computers β it's about understanding how they actually work, grounding their impact in real numbers, and thinking together about our individual and collective responsibility.
For this project, you'll work in stable groups across several sessions. To stay effective and make sure no one coasts on the others' work, we'll structure our approach.
To organise your thinking without stepping on each other's toes within the group, split up the roles or explore each angle in turn:
Forming stable groups, first random draw of a topic. Active research, structuring, and producing a draft poster on paper.
New random draw (different topic). Analysing modern communication techniques and preparing a short-form video (TikTok, Reel, video or livestream).
New random draw. Finalising the final poster (at home). In-class screening of the short videos and lively presentations!
For your presentations (live or on video β TikTok / Reels / YouTube Shorts style), ask yourself the right questions. The blank space is there for your creativity to fill!
